In 1960s those Keralites who settled in Ambernath (Ambernath is situated about 60 kilometers away from proper Mumbai on Central Railway and it is an Industrial Town. Apart from other small, medium and large scale units, Ambernath is home for two biggest ordnance factories employing thousands of people in which there are a good number of Keralites hailing from different parts of Kerala) and were devotees of Lord Ayyappa and who did regular pilgrimages to Sabarimala used to assemble in houses and they formed a “Bhajana Sangam”. This Bhajan Sangam decided to conduct Ayyappa Pooja in public and they began with a One day pooja at the Ordnance ground near co-operative society Store. As the number of participants swelled, the one day pooja got converted into five days Pooja and was performed in make shift temple (erected on temporary basis). These five days pooja were conducted during mandala season, and on the last day Annadanam was offered where thousands of devotees took prasadam of Lord Ayyappa. Every year a group of devotees were taken to Sabarimala on pilgrimage. During this time need for a permanent temple were felt and Shree Ayyappa Mission was formed and registered under Maharashtra Society Act in the year 1978. Thereafter, search for a suitable land started and finally 3 acres of land was purchased from Government of Maharashtra on a Hillock in village Jawsai, Near Ordnance Estate, and Ambernath West. When land was being developed the members came across certain rocky areas and on “Devaprasanam” presence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi was found. The area was enclosed as “Swayambhoo Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvathi” and prayers were offered. One of the Mission member belonged to Pandalam Palace and he brought details of measurement of Sabarimala Temple. The temple construction began as per directions of Shri. Kanippayur Namboodhiri. In 1987 Lord Ayyappa was consecrated along with Lord Ganapati and Goddess Devi by Brahmashri Kandaru Krishnaru Thanthri. After a few months Naga Devatha Prathishta was done. As part of further temple development, 18 sacred steps were constructed and padi pooja was performed in the year 1990 by Brahmashtri Kandaru Rajivaru Thanthri. In the year 1995 Guruvayoorappan Temple was constructed and prathishta was done by Brahmashri Kandaru Rajivaru Thanthri. Navagraha Prathishta was done in the year 2002 by Brahmashri Kandaru Rajivaru Thanthri. As per the findings of the devaprashnam conducted in the year 2004 Naga Devatha Prathishta has been shifted to a separate enclosure. Navagrahas were installed and consecrated in the year 2005. The Mission members felt the need for a “Dwajastambham” without which the temple looked incomplete. In the month of April 2010”Dwajasthambham” was installed at the hands of Brahmashri Kandaru Rajivaru Thanthri. Ayyappagiri is a Hillock situated 2 Kilometers from Ambernath railway station (west). Treading to Ayyappagiri is not only an experience but a good exercise. When we reach Ayyappagiri, a pollution free cool and gentle breeze welcomes us.
