Brahma Temple in Thavanur is the only temple in the world where we can see
the idol of Bhrahmadeva with four faces.
This temple with round shaped Sreekovil is believed to be established by
Parasurama 5000 years ago in Threthayuga. After completing the duties of his
'avatara', Parasurama felt guilty for killing 'Kshathriyas'. For offering 'Pithrutharpana',
he established Brahma Temple at Thavanur and Vishnu Temple at Thirunavaya. It is
believed that Nivedya is done in front of Bhrahma and this is offered at the feet of
Vishnu as Tharpana. The territory established by Parasurama lies between
Kanyakumari and Gokarna, Thirunavaya became the best place for Tharpana
according to Vasthu sasthra and some myth related to a Yaga conducted in
Thavanur. After establishing the Temple, Saptharshies were endowed with the duty
to do Poojas here.
With the presence of Saptharshies, this place came to be known as
Thapasanoor which later became Thavanur.
Along with Balitharpana, Pushpanjali is done for Bhrahmadeva to increase the
blessings of our forefathers. Jathakapooja is done to solve problems in our
horoscope. Nakshatrapooja is done for griha doshams. Navadhanyappara
Vazhipadu is done for problems related to our land property. Santhanagopalapooja
is done for getting good children. Pithrusayoojyapooja is done for the blessings of
our forefathers.

നടത്തുന്നതിനായി പിതൃദേവനായ ബ്രഹ്മാവിനെ തവനൂരിലും
മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ തിരുനാവായിലും പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച് ബ്രഹ്മാവിങ്കൽ
നിവേദിച്ച് മഹാവിഷ്ണു പാദത്തിൽ സമർപ്പിച്ച് തർപ്പണം നടത്തി
എന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യം.
താൻ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചഭൂപ്രദേശമായ ഗോകർണം മുതൽ കന്യാകുമാരി വരെ
ഉള്ള പ്രദേശത്ത് വാസ്തു ശാസ്ത്ര പരമായി തർപ്പണത്തിന് ഏറ്റവും
അനുയോജ്യമായ സ്ഥലമായതു കൊണ്ടും ബ്രഹ്മാവ് യാഗംനടത്തിയ
സ്ഥലമായതു കൊണ്ടും തവനൂരിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു എന്നാണ്
ഐതിഹ്യം
പ്രതിഷ്ഠാനന്തരം സപ്തർഷികൾ ബ്രഹ്മപൂജയ്ക്ക് നിയുക്തരായി
സപ്തർഷികളുടെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യത്താൽ ഈ പ്രദേശം താപസനൂർ എന്ന്
അറിയപ്പെട്ടു. പിന്നീട് താപസനൂർ ലോപിച്ച് തവനൂർ ആയി.
ബലിതർപ്പണത്തിനൊപ്പം ബ്രഹ്മാവിന് പുഷ്പാഞ്ഞ്ജലി നടത്തുന്നത്
പിതൃക്കളുടെ അനുഗ്രഹാശിസ്സുകൾ വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ജാതക
ദോഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ജാതക പൂജയും ഗ്രഹ ചാര ദോഷങ്ങൾക്ക് നക്ഷത്ര
പൂജയും ഭൂമി സംബന്ധമായ ദോഷങ്ങൾക്ക് നവധാന്യപ്പറയും
സൽസന്താന ലബ്ധിയ്ക്ക് സന്താനഗോപാല പൂജയും പിതൃക്കളുടെ
അനുഗ്രഹത്തിന് പിതൃസായൂജ്യ പൂജയും ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രധാന
വഴിപാടുകളാണ്.
