Temple situated in Poovathumoodu NES ROAD, Karikandom, Madappally village near Changanassery of Kottayam district. There are no official records of the origin of the Madappally Shree Bhagavathi temple, which dates back to ancient times and can only be traced back to generations.
The Goddess Chaitanya of Madappally was also discovered by Vilvamangalamswamy, who established many great temples in Kerala and had the vision of Guruvayoorappa. When the sage Swamiyar reached Tengana on his way from the north to the south, he realized that there was a spiritual presence of Lord Mahadevan in this area and he installed a Shivalinga there. Looking east from there, he saw the presence of Bhadrakali, one of the demons of Lord Shiva, who was born out of his braids, and erected an idol near the Vayalunkal forest near the present day Karikandam. Pilka Lathu built a temple on the site of the present site and relocated it there.
In this area which was under the jurisdiction of Edappally Kovilakam, people of different castes from different parts of the country were brought here and made to live by doing their work and providing them with the necessary facilities for living. At that time, important families of all castes were given certain privileges to run the temple.
Even today, the rights of certain families are still being upheld in certain rituals.
Brahmins were brought from the Ambalapuzha area to perform the poojas at the temple and settled here with land and other facilities. In the course of time, when there was no thought but extinction, the people who are now performing the rituals of the caste were brought here and settled here.
