Vettackal Chellappuram Sree Kandakarna Swamy Temple is the main temple
of Karappuram. The main deity is Kandakarna Swami, born from Shiva Chaithanya.
It is believed that Kandakarna Grandfather will come and protect all the people of
Karappuram irrespective of caste and religion.
The temple complex includes the sub-deities of Shastha, Ganapathi,
Anapoorneshwari, Bhadrakali, Marutha Bhagavathy and Ardhanareeshwaran, deities
of Gurunadan, Arukola, Nagaraja and Nagayakshi and a beautifully constructed
Guru Mandir. Poora idi, Vadi Vazhipadu, Kumbhakudam, Urulicha, Kuttimuram,
wooden offering, mesha vepp etc. are held in the temple.
It is believed that Kandakarna Swami will protect the entire devotees of this
country from strong epidemics, miseries and diseases like smallpox. Kandakarnan,
the chief among Lord Shiva's demons, emerged from Lord Shiva's throat to eradicate
his sister Bhadrakali's smallpox. The temple and its surrounding areas are still
surviving due to the power of Kandakarna Swami, despite the outbreak of deadly
infectious diseases.
It is also a place of experience for the devotees from far and wide, and the
special Dhesha Thalappoli of this time and the Vadi Ezhunnullathu during the Vishu
festival is historically famous for its unprecedented number of devotees.
The ancients say that Kandakarnan has seen in dream and in person, who
wears red silk and wears a belt with jingling bells around his waist with his symbol of
a rod wrapped in copper thread in one hand and a bell in the other hand as a guide
and protector at night.
Devotees believe that Appupan will always protect this area irrespective of
caste and creed, today devotees are coming to the temple even from distant places.
