The Goddess Durga is the main deity in this temple. One important aspect of the temple is that, the deity appears as 'Durgabhagavathi' which is an avatar of 'AdiParasakthi'. 'Karthika' is considered as the star of the deity. The major festival of the temple that is Painkuni Mahothsavam,mostly held in the month of March, lasts for 10 days and ends with Pongala & Ezhunnallathu. A Kavu ,(a patch of small forest) which houses the serpent Gods,is common in Travancore & the pond in front of the temple gives a beautiful reflection of the temple.The Temple Thanthri Brahmasree Tharananalloor Parameshwaran Namboodiripad (Same as Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Koodalmanikyam temple) and now the temple is under the control of Sree IrumKulangara DurgaBhagavathi Temple Trust. The temple has been recently renovated with a new chuttambalam and sivelippura which is an excellent example of Kerala Vasthu Vidya and temple architecture in new age. The renovation was carried out under the guidance of noted Vastu Shasthra expert Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboodiripad and the Temple architect Manacaud S Narayanamoorthy.

Sree Irumkulangara DurgaBhagavathi Temple is an ancient pilgrim centre situated in Thottam, Manacaud, Thiruvananthapuram, . It is situated about two kilometres to the south east from Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram City. The Goddess Durga is the main deity in this temple. Unlike other Durga devi temples, rituals like "Thottampaattu" and "Ottam" are restricted in this temple. Red coloured flowers except thetti, are banned here. Other flowers such as Tulsi, Jasmine, Lotus, Nandyarvattom etc are also used here

We can see a Kavu (a patch of small forest) at temple premises which houses the serpent Gods, and is common in Travancore. The temple Kavu was Awarded by Kerala Government Department of Forest and WildeLife as One of the Best maintained Kavu . Also Last Year the Temple created a JanmaNakshtraVanam, a novel concept to popularise tree planting. Astrologers believe that each star is associated with a tree. At temple premises trees associated with the 27 constellations or nakshatras have been planted having medicinal, social, aesthetic or economic value.

The 'Painkuni Mahothsavam', major festival of the temple is mostly held in the Malayalam month of Meenam(March-April), which lasts for 10 days and ends with Ezhunnallathu & Pongala for Madan Thampuran.
The other festivals in this temple are:
• Mandala Vratham - Festival in connection with the annual Utsavam of Sabarimala.
• Vinayaka Chathurthi - Pooja to the Lord Ganapathy.
• Pooja Vaypu - Identical to Dussera festival (Saraswathy Pooja and Vidyarambham).
• Karthika - Kazhchakula Samarpanam, Navakabhishekam, Karthika Pongala, Annadhanam (All Months).
• Ayilya Pooja - Milk, flowers etc. Offered to serpent God and special rites.
• Ayilyolsavam - Nagaroottu and Sarpabali in the month of Thulam
• Ramayana Parayanam & BhagavathiSeva - All days in Karkidakom (Evening).
• Vavu Bali - In the month of Karkidakom.
Lots of people arrive in this temple for performing the Karkidakavavu beli. After Sree Parasurama temple, Mithranandapuram and Sanghumughom, Sree Irumkulangara is the only other temple in Thiruvananthapuram which offers facilities for performing the "Vavu Beli".

Presently, the temple is under the control of Sree IrumKulangara DurgaBhagavathi Temple Trust. The temple has grown up in a quick manner in recent years. Several development activities were taken up. The temple has been recently renovated with a new chuttambalam and sivelippura which is an excellent example of Kerala Vasthu Vidya and temple architecture in new age.

The renovation was carried out under the guidance of noted Vastu Shasthra expert Sri Kanippayyur Krishnan Namboodiripad and the Temple architect Manacaud S Narayanamoorthy. The new facilities of the temple were inaugurated by Sree Uthradam Thirunal Marthandavarma Maharaja on December 25th, 2009. Sree Irumkulangara DurgaBhagavathi exists here with her charming face for the well being of her devotees and the temple attracts a large number of people from all parts of the district.

Sree Irumkulangara DurgaBhagavathi Temple, the abode of Sree Irumkulangara Durga Bhagavathi is one of the most ancient temples in Kerala. The temple is located on the bank of two ponds and hence it got the name "Irumkulangara" ("Irum" means two and "Kulam" means pond). It is hard to find any other temple in Thiruvananthapuram, which preserves the beauty and atmosphere gifted by the nature.

It is believed that the temple has got relationship with the famous Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, one of the main temples in Thiruvananthapuram. In ancient times, priests from Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple are believed to arrive at Irumkulangara by country boats for performing poojas and rituals.

ശ്രീ ഇരുംകുളങ്ങര ദുർഗ ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം

തിരുവനന്തപുരം മണക്കാട് തോട്ടത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന തീർത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രമാണ് ശ്രീ ഇരുംകുളങ്ങര ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം. തിരുവനന്തപുരം നഗരത്തിലെ ശ്രീപത്മനാഭസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ തെക്ക് കിഴക്കായാണ് ഇത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ദുർഗ്ഗാ ദേവിയാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ആദിപരാശക്തിയുടെ അവതാരമായ 'ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതി'യായി ദേവി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രധാന വശം. ദേവന്റെ നക്ഷത്രമായാണ് കാർത്തികയെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. മറ്റ് ദുർഗ്ഗാദേവി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, "തോറ്റംപാട്ട്", "ഓട്ടം" തുടങ്ങിയ ആചാരങ്ങൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നിയന്ത്രിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. തെറ്റി ഒഴികെയുള്ള ചുവന്ന നിറമുള്ള പൂക്കൾ ഇവിടെ നിരോധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. തുളസി, മുല്ല, താമര, നന്ദ്യാർവട്ടം തുടങ്ങിയ മറ്റ് പൂക്കളും ഇവിടെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു

തിരുവിതാംകൂറിൽ സർവസാധാരണമായ നാഗദൈവങ്ങളെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കാവ് (ചെറിയ കാടിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം) ക്ഷേത്ര പരിസരത്ത് നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ കഴിയും. കേരള ഗവൺമെന്റ് ഓഫ് ഫോറസ്റ്റ് ആൻഡ് വൈൽഡ് ലൈഫിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച രീതിയിൽ പരിപാലിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന കാവുകളിൽ ഒന്നായി ക്ഷേത്രകാവ് അവാർഡ് നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വൃക്ഷത്തൈ നടൽ ജനകീയമാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം ക്ഷേത്രം ജന്മനക്ഷത്രവനം എന്ന ഒരു നവീന ആശയം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. ഓരോ നക്ഷത്രവും ഒരു വൃക്ഷവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നുവെന്ന് ജ്യോതിഷികൾ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് 27 രാശികളുമായോ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുമായോ ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾ ഔഷധപരമോ സാമൂഹികമോ സൗന്ദര്യപരമോ സാമ്പത്തികമോ ആയ മൂല്യമുള്ള മരങ്ങൾ നട്ടുപിടിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവമായ 'പൈങ്കുനി മഹോത്സവം' കൂടുതലും നടക്കുന്നത് മലയാള മാസമായ മീനത്തിലാണ് (മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ), ഇത് 10 ദിവസം നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുകയും മാടൻ തമ്പുരാനുള്ള എഴുന്നള്ളത്തും പൊങ്കാലയും അവസാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റ് ഉത്സവങ്ങൾ ഇവയാണ്:
• മണ്ഡല വ്രതം - ശബരിമലയിലെ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള ഉത്സവം.
• വിനായക ചതുർത്ഥി - ഗണപതിക്ക് പൂജ.
• പൂജ വയ്പ്പ് - ദസറ ഉത്സവത്തിന് (സരസ്വതി പൂജയും വിദ്യാരംഭവും) സമാനമാണ്.
• കാർത്തിക - കാഴ്ചകുല സമർപ്പണം, നവകാഭിഷേകം, കാർത്തിക പൊങ്കാല, അന്നദാനം (എല്ലാ മാസങ്ങളും).
• ആയില്യ പൂജ - പാൽ, പൂക്കൾ മുതലായവ. നാഗദൈവത്തിന് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്നതും പ്രത്യേക പൂജാവിധികളും.
• ആയില്യോൽസവം - തുലാം മാസത്തിലെ നാഗരൂട്ടും സർപ്പബലിയും
• രാമായണപാരായണം & ഭഗവതിസേവ - എല്ലാ ദിവസവും കർക്കിടകം (വൈകുന്നേരം).
• വാവു ബലി - കർക്കിടകം മാസത്തിൽ.
കർക്കിടകവാവ് ബലി നടത്താൻ ധാരാളം ആളുകൾ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്താറുണ്ട്. ശ്രീ പരശുരാമ ക്ഷേത്രം, മിത്രാനന്ദപുരം, ശംഖുമുഖം എന്നിവ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് "വാവുബലി" നടത്താനുള്ള സൗകര്യമുള്ള ഒരേയൊരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ശ്രീ ഇരുംകുളങ്ങര.

നിലവിൽ ശ്രീ ഇരുംകുളങ്ങര ദുർഗ്ഗാഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം ട്രസ്റ്റിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാണ്. കേരള വാസ്തു വിദ്യയുടെയും പുതിയ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ ക്ഷേത്ര വാസ്തുവിദ്യയുടെയും ഉത്തമോദാഹരണമായ പുതിയ ചുറ്റമ്പലവും ശീവേലിപ്പുരയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ക്ഷേത്രം അടുത്തിടെ പുതുക്കിപണിതിട്ടുണ്ട്.
പ്രശസ്ത വാസ്തു ശാസ്ത്ര വിദഗ്ദൻ ശ്രീ കാണിപ്പയ്യൂർ കൃഷ്ണൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടിന്റെയും ക്ഷേത്ര ശില്പി മണക്കാട് എസ് നാരായണമൂർത്തിയുടെയും നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് നവീകരണം നടന്നത്. 2009 ഡിസംബർ 25-ന് ശ്രീ ഉത്രാടം തിരുനാൾ മാർത്താണ്ഡവർമ്മ മഹാരാജാവാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തത്..

തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ശ്രീപത്മനാഭ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ബന്ധമുണ്ടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പുരാതന കാലത്ത് ശ്രീപത്മനാഭ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പൂജാരിമാർ ഇരുംകുളങ്ങരയിൽ നാട്ടുവള്ളങ്ങളിൽ പൂജകൾക്കും അനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങൾക്കുമായി എത്തിയിരുന്നതായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന
