A golden opportunity for devotees to propitiate Lord Kodandarama. The spiritual abode is Jadayu Rama Temple at Chadayamangalam, in Kerala’s Kollam district. Here a devotee needs only to ascend a flight of steps, step by step, and prostrate at the lotus feet of Sri Rama and experience self-fulfillment. During 1973, Pujya Swami Sathyananda Saraswathi who was among the top Sanyasis on Ayodhya Movement, done the reinstallation of Sri Rama here.
It is the holy spot where Jatayu had sacrificed his life for protecting the honour of Sita Devi. Jatayu through his martyrdom upheld the “Bharateeya” moral values of life that the pride and honor of women should be protected.
His is a lofty example of staunch, selfless and sincere devotion (bhakti). Jatayu fought with Ravana with vigor, courage and valour. It was, indeed, a selfless fight by a warrior. The greatness of Jatayu was that he took on Ravana for no personal gains and the sacrifice was merely for protecting the honor and pride of Sita Devi. He did it with complete surrender to the Lord and thus became a manifestation of selfless devotion.
His last wish was to have a glimpse of Lord Sri Ram and then to narrate the incident before breathing his last. Jadayu was tired after the fight with Ravana. To quench his thirst Jadayu created a “Kokkarani” (water tank) by rubbing the rock with his beak. Sri Ramachandra held Jadayu in His lap and heard the narrative. As the time has come for the bird to leave his body Lord Ram performed the last rites as He did it for his father Dasaratha. Thus, the Lord granted salvation to Jatayu by standing on one leg on the top of the Jatayu rock, where His foot print surfaced and it exists even now. A pilgrimage to this holy site is, undoubtedly, going to be a memorable spiritual experience guiding a devotee to self-realization. To make the trekking to the top of the rock comfortable a divine effort titled “Padam Padam Sri Rama Paadam” (Step by step to the feet of Sri Rama) has been initiated. ദാഹം ശമിപ്പിക്കാൻ തന്റെ കൊക്കുകൊണ്ട് പാറയിൽ ഉരച്ച് ഒരു "കൊക്കരണി" (വാട്ടർ ടാങ്ക്) സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു. ശ്രീരാമചന്ദ്രൻ ജഡായുവിനെ മടിയിലിരുത്തി കഥ കേട്ടു. പക്ഷി തന്റെ ശരീരം വിട്ടുപോകേണ്ട സമയമായതിനാൽ ഭഗവാൻ ശ്രീരാമൻ തന്റെ പിതാവായ ദശരഥന് ചെയ്തതുപോലെ അന്ത്യകർമങ്ങൾ നടത്തി. അങ്ങനെ, ജടായു പാറയുടെ മുകളിൽ ഒറ്റക്കാലിൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഭഗവാൻ ജടായുവിന് മോക്ഷം നൽകി, അവിടെ അവന്റെ പാദമുദ്ര തെളിഞ്ഞു, അത് ഇന്നും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. രാമായണത്തിലെ "ജടായുസ്തുതി" (ശ്രീരാമനെ സ്തുതിക്കുന്ന ശ്ലോകം) ഭക്തർ ഇവിടെ വായിക്കുന്നു.
ഈ പുണ്യസ്ഥലത്തേക്കുള്ള തീർത്ഥാടനം, ഒരു ഭക്തനെ ആത്മസാക്ഷാത്കാരത്തിലേക്ക് നയിക്കുന്ന അവിസ്മരണീയമായ ആത്മീയ അനുഭവമായിരിക്കും.
